First Day of a New World

First Day of a New World
<< previous page | Contents | next page >>
We met today,

       and it was the first day
of colours; of taste; of brightness;
and you were the first sound
that stopped the silence;
the sweetest to voice
the first word;              and the first law laid down
will be to win is to surrender:
and we'll break through
each other's battlements
without murder or war;
we'll give direction again
to our old roads
that led somewhere once;

       and in the first steps of spring,
we'll seed new ground;
soften the bedding soil
with the tips of gentle fingers
reddening as blushed crimson;
slowly opening up the other
to settle parched roots
knotted for the touch of rain              -- the air heating
with the budding pollen
of a fresh morning; warming us
with a million tiny touches
as if there were hands inside our bodies
softly caressing -- and in the evening
stars will shine
with the colour of your skin;
and when l feel as if night were falling
inside of me, I'll set my compass
by your light;
and you'll surround me like the Sun;
when you are east, that is where I'll be;
and when you are west,
then I'll be there, too:

       and there'll be no need
for questions with us;
answers will be unnecessary:
we'll speak by telepathy
to make friends with the silence
you stopped like a former enemy;              and looking at each other
will be like looking in a mirror;
our eyes will see ourselves clearly:
sometimes shy as a stranger,
or familiar as a friend -- but often with
the courage of a lover
to follow blindly
the river's flow to its end --

10
       and to each other we'll be armoury
enough when we tire
against the tide of time;
as a body for shelter,
and as a hand to hold;
as water to rule the thirst,
and as food for hunger;
as wild and free as kisses
that willingly choose
the captivity of lips,
and as touch is to fingertips
that help the blind to see;
but mostly as a need               -- that is what we'll be --
a need that can create
a world; and there
to always have our story
read aloud as a charm
before the time we'll sleep; to be
made timeless by its telling
beside each fireside lit
by our ancestry, about this first day
of our new world; where

we met today.
