If indeed to discover the mind-body connection we need to consciously traverse the "pathways to the heart", then to understand the brain is to embark blindfold on a journey through the labyrinth of our own minds. Often we are not even in the driver's seat. From driving to work to navigating social interactions, our minds operate on auto-pilot more often than we realise, shaping our daily experiences in profound ways that psychologists are only beginning to unravel. It is a fascinating phenomenon that touches every aspect of our lives, yet remains largely invisible to us.

Have you ever arrived at your destination without remembering the journey? Or found yourself reaching for a snack without consciously deciding to do so? Welcome to the world known as psychological auto-pilot. Thus, as we continue on the intriguing subject of how our minds work, to explore the hidden mechanisms that guides our actions and shapes our experiences, in this short chapter and the next, the manual will briefly touch upon a discussion on how conscious we really are during our waking consciousness, and how to take back control and become more aware during our decision-making and cognition processes.

In understanding our mental processes, we become more aware of the self, yet sometimes the more we learn to become aware, the more we realise how unaware we really are - especially in regards to that enigmatic part of our body, the brain. It is a super-efficient multitasker, constantly juggling numerous tasks without breaking a sweat, and that is essentially what auto-pilot mode is all about. In psychological terms, auto-pilot refers to the mind’s ability to perform complex tasks with minimal conscious effort or attention. It is like having a personal assistant in your head, taking care of the mundane stuff while you focus on more important matters.

Furthermore, according to recent research, conscious choice accounts for only a fraction of what you do each day. The vast majority of your actions are dictated by habit; around two-thirds of our daily behaviours are set in motion automatically, triggered by familiar environments, timings or routines. In other words, we live much of life on auto-pilot. But although habits rule our daily lives, they may be the key to achieving our goals, because if we had to think about everything we were doing, life would be almost paralysing.

So, why should we care about this seemingly unremarkable process? Well, understanding auto-pilot is crucial because of the fact it plays a massive role in shaping our daily lives. From the moment we wake up to the time we go to sleep, auto-pilot mode influences our decisions, behaviours, and even our perceptions of the world around us. It is the silent conductor orchestrating the symphony of our everyday experiences. If we care to listen to a certain song in the solace of our inner sanctum at the end of the day, it will invariably be this conductor that selects the music.

This point about the inner sanctum is a pivotal one: Scientific studies have discovered that when aligned with our concious goals, far from undermining our intentions, many habits actually help us achieve them. Habits are not the enemy of free will, but a valuable tool that frees up mental resources for other things, and research is beginning to recognise that it can be a good thing to be able to automate much of what we want to do, as long as it aligns with our sense of self. When we set out to create a positive habit, whether that is around better sleep hygiene, or nutrition, or general wellbeing improvements, we can rely on an internal auto-pilot to take over and help us maintain those habits. There is nothing inherently good or bad about habit itself. If it helps you meet your goals, it is a good habit. If it works against them, it is a bad habit. If you on auto-pilot still reflects your authentic self, then letting your brain carry the load is what it was made to do.

The findings suggest that habits can be harnessed for public health and personal wellbeing. For example, anchoring a new behaviour to a reliable cue (like exercising after work) can help it stick. With habits and routine, however, exercise does stand out as an exception, because while people often decide to do it automatically, carrying it out still requires conscious effort. That being said, you can utilise your auto-pilot mode for some exercises, like rowing or cycling, to put you in a mediative state, and strengthen your endurance.

The Cognitive Gears Behind Auto-Pilot Mode

To truly grasp the concept of auto-pilot, we need to quickly examine the cognitive mechanisms that make it all possible. It is like understanding the difference between driving a manual and an automatic car - both get you where you need to go, but the processes involved are quite different. Or think of it as fast and slow decision making. At the heart of auto-pilot mode lies the distinction between automatic and controlled processing. Automatic processing is like cruise control for your brain – it is fast, effortless, and does not require much attention. On the flip side, controlled processing is more like navigating a tricky mountain road; it demands focus, effort, and conscious thought.

But how does our brain decide which gear to shift into? Well, something termed as procedural memory comes into play. This type of memory is responsible for storing and retrieving information about how to perform various tasks. It is the reason you can tie your shoelaces without giving it a second thought, or type on a keyboard without looking at your fingers. Procedural memory is the unsung hero of auto-pilot mode, quietly working behind the scenes to make our lives easier. Studies have shown that when we are on auto-pilot, certain areas of the brain, particularly those regions associated with habit formation and motor control, take the wheel, allowing us to perform complex actions without conscious effort - hence why our lives can feel driven by habit.

To Brave the StormThe classic example of auto-pilot mode is driving. If you have ever had that experience of arriving at your destination with no recollection of the journey, then that is auto-pilot in full swing. Your procedural memory takes over, allowing you to navigate familiar routes while your conscious mind decides what cardio excersises to do at the gym. But the psychology of driving is just the tip of the iceberg. Auto-pilot mode, as we have seen, extends to countless routine tasks and habitual behaviours. Think about your morning routine - brushing your teeth, making coffee, getting dressed. Chances are, you perform these tasks on auto-pilot, freeing up mental resources for more pressing matters that need careful consideration in the day ahead.

The downside to auto-pilot mode is that it can sometimes lead us astray. Imagine if on the car journey, stuck on auto-pilot, a storm suddenly comes? How do we steer through it? We have discussed the importance of awareness across many chapters, and when we are not paying attention, we are more prone to errors and to miss important details. If you have ever put the milk in the cupboard and the cereal in the fridge, then that is auto-pilot mode gone rogue. There is also an interesting relationship between auto-pilot and creativity. Awareness boosts creativity, and while auto-pilot can help us breeze through routine tasks, it might not be the best mode for tackling novel problems or coming up with innovative ideas. Sometimes, we need to switch off the auto-pilot and take manual control to think outside the box.

In addition, research has shown that excessive reliance on auto-pilot mode can contribute to feelings of anxiety and depression. When we are constantly operating on auto-pilot, we might miss out on our positive experiences or fail to notice early signs of stress or emotional distress.

So, how can we take back control? How can we harness the power of auto-pilot while avoiding its pitfalls? The next chapter will deal with how we can drive our self on manual, and we will see it is very similar to the methods we use to unlock our senses.
